Chapter Twenty-Two

Vanessa purred, making herself cozy against his chest. Her lips pursed into a pout at the feeling of clothes instead of flesh. “Why are you dressed?” She sat up in the bed, letting the blanket fall away from her naked body. She balled her hands into fists and wiped the sleep out of her eyes, yawning in the process. “When did you get in?”

He stretched his legs and arms out, yawning with her. “A few hours ago. You go on and get up. I need to get some more rest.”

She scoffed, pushing him roughly out of the bed. He tumbled to the floor with a grunt, perspiration instantly sheening his skin with rage.

“Drake Jackson, you will do no such thing. I have you until Saturday morning and I do not intend to waste any of that time watching you snore away the hours. You get up and get yourself clean. You need to shave, and you stink like filthy cows. I want to go shopping. You can sleep tonight when I sleep.”

She bounded out of the bed, confident enough with herself to be unashamed with her nudity. “And leave that hideous Indian here. It’s humiliating having him go everywhere we do. Do you hear some of the things people say about him? The ladies at the club are always saying such awful things. It’s utterly embarrassing.

“Oda!” she cried over her shoulder. “Where is Oda? Where is that girl? I swear Drake, these negroes are too cushioned. You need to be out there with a whip on them. That’ll straighten them up,” she added with acrimony as she plopped her bare bottom onto the silk cushioned stool in front of the elaborate vanity table. She picked up a silver encrusted brush and dragged it down her long, straight hair.

He crawled off the floor, his body aching with exhaustion. Sitting on the edge of the bed, he rubbed at the four days of stubble on his chin, cutting his lids and glaring at her, growling deep from his chest. “No, dammit. Those are human beings down there, not animals. They belong to me; those are my people. You leave them be.”

She turned sideways on the stool to gaze across the room at him. The thick lashes around her slightly almond shaped, violet eyes batted innocently. “Poor Drake. Just as naïve as ever. You don’t live here all the time like I do. You don’t see them slacking off at every possible opportunity. I do. For instance, where is my girl? Oda is supposed to be right out that door, waiting for me to call her. Yet here I sit, getting myself ready. Honestly, a good beating will-”

“I said no!” he hissed cautiously. “I mean it. If I find out any of those slaves out there have been harmed in any way, I will come after you with a whip. Understand?”

Resting her chin on the top of the brush, she arched a thin, black brow, grinning wickedly. “Is that a promise?”

“Ise here, Miss Vanessa.
